Palermo in the ‘70s and ‘80s: The Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra is waging brutal gang warfare, and explosions, gunfire and bodies out in the street have become routine. The bosses put a price on the head of anyone who gets in the way of organised crime. Investigating judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino do not want to accept rule by corruption and violence. They successfully investigate the mafia, although they know that they will have to pay with their lives sooner or later. Anno Schreier’s new opera tells the story of people for whom fairness, law and transparency are more important than their own survival.
