Romeo and Julia

In a production by Joanna Praml and Dorle Trachternach
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is generally taken to be the best-known and greatest love story of all time – one reason being that the love match is unworkable and fated to be snuffed out after a mere five days: this is because the two protagonists are star-crossed lovers, being offspring of two feuding families, the Capulets and Montagues. Driven by their passion and unconditional devotion to each other, the pair go up against their families’ age-old spiral of vengeance and violence. Reconciliation is achieved, albeit too late for the hero and heroine.
Director Joanna Praml brings together ensemble members and Nuremberg teenagers in a production that explores the topicality of the material, which is still held up as emblematic of romantic love, despite all the distractions of online dating, sexual promiscuity and new relationship models.
