People reacted in wildly different ways to Jesus as a man and a phenomenon: some viewed him as a superstar, others saw him as a threat to their privileges, a friend betrayed him. In their rock opera Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber present the final week in the life of Jesus primarily through the lens of people who knew and had dealings with him. In his score the 20-year-old Lloyd Webber reflects the full panoply of characters as they pursue their various plots, power games and urges to assert themselves or achieve harmony. His famous work has lost none of its relevance today, with society faced at once with religious fanaticism and the crisis of the Church.
