ANDERSEN OR: WHAT’S LEFT BEHIND?
Regie: Cosmea Spelleken
XRT 3. Etage
A trace of spume is all that’s left of the little mermaid. The steadfast tin soldier is reduced by fire to a solidified lump in the shape of a heart. And the lilac mother ends up as a solitary petal in the teapot. The question of what remains of us when we leave this world is a leitmotiv in the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, along with the implicit question: what do we want to be – and how do we want to be viewed and remembered? Gone are the days when people left only tangible and paper trails when they passed on. Our ‘socials’ and the impression they give of us are rocketing in importance. In her production Cosmea Spelleken uses a raft of media to render Andersen’s tales for the stage, deploying not only the genres of film, theatre and the digital world but also a panoply of fairy tales to reference his life story. Which nightingale – the real one or the fake? – will sing of our deeds when we’re gone? And how important is it to distinguish between the two?
