Have you felt the need to get back at someone lately, to hit back angrily? Presumably you did not. Because revenge is socially outlawed. This applies: Justice instead of revenge! A credo with which, among other things, the Nuremberg Trials were opened. But revenge is at home in the realm of myths, in literature, film, theatre and music. We have been processing them there for thousands of years: Medea murders her own children, Michael Koolhaas sets cities on fire, Batman chases through the dark streets of Gotham City, Dr Bartolo and the Queen of the Night put everything on the line. And they all sing, talk, act in their names. But via the diversions of social media, the street is increasingly becoming a stage for anger and revenge - all the way to the Capitol in Washington.
Thomas Köck's text uses great works of theatre and opera literature to examine the significance of revenge for our society. In Jan Philipp Gloger's production, artists from all disciplines use their forms of expression to bring the great revenge figures to life on stage.
