Ecstatic dolls and a frenetic sacrificial victim… This evening of ballet is two choreographers’ response to the seminal ballet music of Igor Stravinsky’s provocative work of the century, “Le Sacre Du Printemps”, and his very different, sombre fairy tale, “Petruschka”. In “Sacre”, his new interpretation of the famous piece, Goyo Montero expresses in dance form the spiritual rite surrounding the definitive sacrificial victim, in which a chosen person accepts death so that the community might thrive. In Douglas Lee’s “Petruschka” dolls spookily come to life, with a Russian fair serving as the backdrop to a tale of jealousy and rage, reality and demonic fantasy. Notices in response to the premiere of the orchestra-ballet in the 2019/20 season described the work as “an absolute hit” (Nürnberger Zeitung), “a double triumph” (Donaukurier) and “remarkable” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).

Description

Press reviews
BR Klassik

"Montero dares something new in his twelfth year as ballet director ‒ and wins (...) In the end there was a lot of applause for Douglas Lee and the ballet company ‒ and thunderous applause for the orchestra, Montero, Mallwitz and especially Sofie Vervaecke ‒ absolutely deserved!"

Matthias Rüd, BR Klassik, 12/23/2019

Nürnberger Zeitung

"Goyo Montero choreographs "Sacre" and guest choreographer Douglas Lee "Petrushka". Together with GMD Joana Mallwitz on the podium of the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, the new ballet production of "Stravinsky" at the Opera House was an absolute hit."

Thomas Heinold, Nürnberger Zeitung

Bayerische Staatszeitung

Uwe Mitsching, Bayerische Staatszeitung

Süddeutsche Zeitung

"In "Petrushka", Lee emphasizes the fairy-tale quality of the original. Not in a kitschy way, but by staging the unusual, even the unusually sad aspects of the story, with a mixture of fairy tale and fairground morality, and once again (...) exploring the boundary between human and puppet."

Florian Welle, Süddeutsche Zeitung, 12/22/2019

Die Deutsche Bühne

"The cruel church service with the collapse is not the preferred focus; the desire for empathy shimmers glisteningly in the total expenditure and is thus proclaimed to be the basis of all survival art. Montero once again choreographs the entire ensemble as a collective event (...) exposed to the latent "earthquake" of Stravinsky's composition. Result: eerily beautiful catastrophes."

Dieter Stoll, Die Deutsche Bühne, 12/22/2019

Nürnberger Nachrichten

"The strong profile of this double bill of “Stravinsky” is formed, on the one hand, by the exceptional dancing performances of both the soloists and the entire ensemble, and on the other hand, by the tonal force that Joana Mallwitz and the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg bring to life in unpolished roughness."

Jens Voskamp, Nürnberger Nachrichten

O-Ton

"This ballet evening is like an energy discharge of the bodies, driven by an energetically charged music."

Renate Freyeisen, O-Ton, 12/28/2019

Donaukurier

"Staatstheater Nürnberg has its Christmas fairy tale: The premiere of the ballet double bill "Stravinsky" in the opera house turned out to be a double triumph – that of the outstanding Nuremberg dance ensemble and that of ballet director Goyo Montero, who wrote dance history with his sovereign new interpretation of "Le sacre du printemps"."

Katharina Tank, Donaukurier

tanz

"Exceptional performances by the dancers ensured a strong profile for this 'Stravinsky' evening; and the same applies to the conducting of General Music Director Joana Mallwitz and the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg."

Jens Voskamp, tanz

Dance Europe

"(Montero) leaves the viewer overwhelmed with wonder and surprise"

"One of the most striking elements of Lee's piece (Petruschka) is its dark, minimalist beauty: black staging, deep purple-coloured costumes against bright white light bulbs symbolising awareness, an aim or simply an idea."

Alison Kent, Dance Europe

tanznetz.de

"Pure pleasure at the Staatstheater Nürnberg."

"Montero’s troupe danced with precision, crystal clarity, athleticism and following inner lines so that it was a joy to experience dance as a work of art."
