Brunhild is considered invincible, only the hero Siegfried can conquer her. But not for himself, he fights for King Gunther to win her hand in exchange for the King’s sister, Kriemhild. The monstrous deception is betrayed, Brunhild demands revenge: Siegfried shall fall. On her behalf, Hagen Tronje treacherously murders the hero. A monstrous deed that Kriemhild cannot leave unpunished. Their revenge festers for a long time and rages all the more terribly. At the court of her second husband, King Etzel, she has her family massacred together with her followers.

Unbridled aggression, aggrieved vanity, power-seeking and destructiveness - the darkest urges of humanity unite in the German national epic. Director Armin Petras questions the myth of the Nibelungs for its significance for our self-image, for the identity and attitude of our society in history and today. What does a national legend say about a country and its people? And what is our relationship to our history?

Press reviews
