header Weisse Rose

based on texts by Wolfgang Willaschek

A collaboration with the Gustav-Adolf-Gedächtniskirche

At first Hans and Sophie Scholl were enthusiastic adherents of National Socialism, but then they gradually distanced themselves: the class-based thinking, the restriction of personal freedoms and the war profoundly contradicted their Christian and humanist beliefs. Distributing leaflets signed “Weiße Rose”, they called on people to resist the regime and paid for it with their lives. In his cham-ber opera Udo Zimmermann examines the interior world of the siblings in the hour of their death, depicting the thoughts, fears, values and memories of the two students in a way that imprints itself upon the audience. For Hans and Sophie Scholl, faith was one of the cornerstones of their lives. What better place than a church, then, in which to watch their story unfold.

Press reviews

Uwe Mitsching, Bayerische Staatszeitung
