Das Erbeben in Chili

Just as Jeronimo is getting ready to hang himself in his prison cell, the city collapses about him “with a mighty bang and crash, as if the heavens had fallen in”. Jeronimo huddles by the pillar where he had been planning to die moments before. In his tour-de-force novella “The Earthquake in Chile” Kleist depicts a catastrophe that brutally overrides the established order. He shows people coping with the disaster and describes how a utopia seems to rise up at the very moment that things are disintegrating all around. One man’s boon is many others’ curse. And, last but not least, he gives us a touching love story.

Press reviews

Christiane Lutz, Sueddeutsche Zeitung
