A collaboration with the ‘Culture Capital N2025’ bidding bureau

Someone stole the villa. The footings are still clearly visible, but where there was a house a short while ago, now there is none. Instead, there’s a chorus insisting repeatedly that it forgives but does not forgive, pacing back and forth between downstage left and upstage right, and guiding an individual through a museum or a squatted or possessed house or even the villa that’s reappeared. Reason enough for the individual and the actors present, to ponder on love, without which the spot might be a vacant lot, on quantum mechanics and its relationship to dialectical materialism, and on things like:

“Regardless of where I’ve seen something on the subject of theatre, some Peter Zadek documentary or whatever (I’ve seen so much stuff), it’s about people repeating a stereotype in interviews: “It's not about giving answers, it’s about asking questions.” Again and again they say: “You have to ask questions, questions, questions... And the crazy thing is: they always do the opposite in these documentary interviews. It’s only ever answers, answers, answers.”

Or:

“We use a lot of paper during the rehearsals, and sometimes you feel sorry for the trees. And the other day someone on television made a throwaway remark to the effect that: It’s important that the products, i.e. what you produce, are more valuable than the raw materials. And if you take the SUPERILLU, for example, and a tree..., then the SUPERILLU should actually be banned. Someone has got to ban it. You can’t rely on the people who read the SUPERILLU not to buy it anymore. And yesterday I was thinking... I used to be a strict vegetarian - from age 16 to maybe 25 or so… And yesterday or the day before yesterday it occurred to me that it might be more exciting – because I already eat a lot of meat – for people to watch the animals on stage instead of me.”

René Pollesch, playwright, director, artistic director of the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and one of the most renowned theatre professionals in Germany, has teamed up with members of the drama ensemble to develop “Take the Villa and Run!”, his first work at the Staatstheater Nürnberg.

Press reviews
Deutschlandfunk

Egbert Tholl, Sueddeutsche Zeitung
