Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica

Puccini’s “Japanese tragedy” tops the charts among the opera-going public, and the composer, too, was particularly moved by the fate of his Madama Butterfly, who is bought, used and then abandoned by Pinkerton, an officer of the American marines on leave. Underlying the stirring score and exquisite sound of the orchestra is not just a period drama set in picaresque Japan; at the story’s heart lies a conflict that will retain its relevance as long as a Cio-Cio-San has only the choice between prostitution and suicide.
