Joop Caboort was born into a theatrical family in Den Haag in 1944 and began working as a trainee electrician at the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) in 1965. From 1970 to 1995 he was Technical Director of the NDT. In 1970 he also became the house lighting designer of the company and has since designed around 600 works, including ballets by Hans van Manen, Jiří Kylián, Nacho Duato, Jennifer Muller, Louis Falco, Glen Tetley, Maurice Béjart, Nils Christe u. a. Caboort also worked in close collaboration with the stage designers Jean-Paul Vroom, Keso Dekker, William Katz, Walter Nobbe, Nadine Bayliss, John F. Macfarlane, Michael Simon and many others. Caboort has worked in over 100 theaters and opera houses around the world, including London's Covent Garden Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich, and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. In 1995, Joop Caboort founded his own office for lighting design & theater consulting and has been working freelance ever since. Joop Caboort is a lecturer at the Graphic Lyceum in Rotterdam in the field of theater technology.
